GrEAT!
GrEAT was set up for those participants who still enjoy coming to KEEN but who are over eighteen and would benefit from more age-specific activities.
There is a lack of opportunities for young adults with special needs to enjoy access to the same facilities and entertainments as their non-disabled peers. GrEAT aims to change this and to provide more age-appropriate activities for its members to help them be as independent and included as possible.
During a GrEAT session
GrEAT aims to offer a whole range of activities – anything from staying in for Halloween parties and themed nights to cinema trips and pub evenings. Sometimes we have visitors, which have recently included Oxford a capella choir "The Alternotives", a drumming and dance workshop and the Irish dancing society.
We recognize that the athletes who come to GREAT are adults, so GrEAT differs from the other KEEN sessions. Firstly, we use the terms “member” and “buddy” rather than the “athlete” and “coach” used in other sessions. Secondly, individuals are not paired one-to-one but are encouraged to work and mingle as a group. Finally, the members have far more input into what takes place during GREAT sessions and are able to vote for their favourite activities.
When and where are the GrEAT sessions held?
GrEAT runs on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30pm. GrEAT sessions are held all over Oxford city centre! The best way to find out where we are is to look at the termcard or to have a look at the latest KEEN Review. If we’re in a hall we will be in the St.Clement’s Family Centre or the John Wesley Memorial Hall. For evenings out, we will meet at the location of the event (often the cinema or a pub) - but be sure to check the review for details. If you take the bus, your ticket will be refunded.
Check the review or e-mail keen@keenoxford.org for directions.
